Mars Odyssey


Come next Wednesday, NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter will have worked longer at the Red Planet than any other spacecraft in history. If you're keeping score, the Odyssey entered Mars' orbit around Mars on Oct. 24, 2001. When it starts its 3,340th day on the job on Dec. 15, it will break the previous record for Martian career longevity record set by its predecessor, Mars Global Surveyor, which operated in orbit from Sept. 11, 1997, to Nov. 2, 2006. Military to Cut Fossil Fuel Use In Half by 2020

Who would have thunk? According to Ray Mabus, the Navy Secretary said he wants 50 percent of the power for the Navy and Marines to come from renewable energy sources by 2020. That figure includes energy for bases as well as fuel for cars...
The military this year has pushed rapidly forward. After a decade of waging wars in remote corners of the globe where fuel is not readily available, senior commanders have come to see overdependence on fossil fuel as a big liability, and renewable technologies — which have become more reliable and less expensive over the past few years — as providing a potential answer. 
The 150 Marines of Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, will be the first to take renewable technology into a battle zone, where the new equipment will replace diesel and kerosene-based fuels that would ordinarily generate power to run their encampment.

Science: Spacecraft Cassini's Images of Saturn's Moon Enceladus

The Cassini spacecraft’s November flyby of Saturn’s moon Enceladus has revealed new features including at least 20 more icy plumes spewing from the moon’s southern pole.
New infrared science data gives scientists the highest resolution temperature map of one particular warm fissure called a “tiger stripe.” The moon’s four tiger stripes are fractures that spew a mix of ice particles, water vapor and organic compounds into space. They are a key clue for scientists trying to figure out if small moon harbors a liquid water ocean under its frosty surface. Now, scientists know that their temperatures can exceed 180 Kelvin (minus 135 degrees Fahrenheit).  Wired
